Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a time of fun, creativity, and excitement, but ensuring safety during trick-or-treating is essential to enjoy the holiday. With streets busier than usual and children navigating unfamiliar areas, practicing safety precautions is critical. The tips below will help you have a safe and fun holiday.

  • Wear reflective clothing: Add reflective tape or wear bright colors to ensure visibility, especially if your costume is dark. Glow sticks or flashlights can also help.

  • Use face paint instead of masks: Masks can obstruct vision. Opt for face paint or makeup to allow better visibility and avoid tripping.

  • Stay on sidewalks: Stick to sidewalks and cross streets at designated crosswalks. Avoid walking through yards, where obstacles may be challenging to see.

  • Travel in groups: Trick-or-treat in groups or with a trusted adult. There's safety in numbers, and it makes the experience more fun!

  • Inspect candy before eating: Make sure all candy and treats are sealed and look safe. Discard anything that's homemade or looks suspicious.

  • Carry a flashlight: Use a flashlight to see where you’re going, especially in dimly lit areas. It helps you stay aware of obstacles and increases visibility to drivers.

  • Use safe costumes: Avoid long costumes that drag on the ground or accessories that could cause tripping. Make sure any props are flexible and not sharp.

  • Follow traffic rules: Look both ways before crossing the street and make eye contact with drivers before stepping in front of cars.

  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods: Stick to areas you know well. Avoid homes that are not well-lit or where you feel unsafe.

  • Don’t enter homes: Only accept candy from people at the door. Never go inside a stranger’s house, even if invited.
