Lead is a naturally occurring metal that is harmful if inhaled or ingested. No safe levels of lead in blood have been identified. Children six years old and younger are more vulnerable, but lead exposure is harmful to all ages. Common sources of lead exposure include chipping or peeling paint in buildings built before 1978, water from lead pipes, soil near airports, highways, or factories, some imported goods, and certain jobs and hobbies.

The Environmental Lead Program oversees the lead-based paint hazard detection and abatement industry to ensure that lead-based paint hazards are safely found and removed from homes and child-occupied faculties. The program works to protect the health of these occupants, especially young children who can often be more at risk for lead hazards.

Kentucky has not established laws or regulations concerning mold contamination. Currently, no federal standards exist for permissible exposure limits. With no statutes in place for mold exposure or remediation, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services has no authority over mold related issues.

Mosquitoes are small flying insects that can transmit disease to humans. These vectors can transmit diseases such as West Nile Virus (WNV) and La Crosse virus. Mosquitos thrive in warm areas (50-95° F) with standing fresh water (lakes, ponds, swamps, manmade sources). By working to eliminate breeding conditions, harmful transmission can be reduced.

The Bullitt County Health Department does not offer a mosquito fogging program but may educate and investigate complaints regarding environmental mosquito harborage conditions.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rocks. Because radon cannot easily be detected, it can build up indoors through cracks in foundations, gaps around pipes, sump pumps, crawl spaces, and other openings without being noticed. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the United States after cigarette smoke.

As it may take several years to exhibit symptoms, testing your home is the only effective way to know your level of exposure. Please see the following resources to learn more about radon testing and mitigation.
